Noise-level measurement
The basic measurement principle of the Ortomat data logger is to test a pipe network in its operational state. Data loggers, also called sensors are, to put it simply, listening devices with a memory function.

For the pre-location of leaks, sensors which register the noises in the pipe network are placed at various measurement points at intervals of approx. 100-150 m. Then, the data collected is evaluated. The aim of these measurements is the recognition of permanent noises and, therefore, of leaks. This acoustic zone monitoring using Ortomat data loggers is regarded as being a reliable and modern means of leak location and has been proven as being optimally effective for all sizes of piping networks.

After the measurements have been made, the noise data is passed on to the analysis software for evaluation. The data analysis is carried out in such a way that the lowest noise level (between two and four o’clock in the early morning) is depicted as a graphic. If the lowest measured value at a point of measurement falls below the minimum value of 5 dB, there is no leak in this particular measurement sector. If the minimum noise level is higher than 5 dB, one can assume that there is a leak in the measurement sector.
